LA Galaxy Fans Should Boo David Beckham
June 2nd, 2009 by JR Patton in Soccer
David Beckham has left AC Milan and is headed back to LA to play out the rest of the season for the Galaxy. The Galaxy have already played just under half of the MLS games on their schedule this season. If you ask me the boo birds should come a calling for Beckham the second he steps on the pitch for LA this Saturday at Toronto.
After months and months of back and forth over the David Beckham saga, he finally announced that he would play out the season with AC Milan and then return to LA to fulfill his contract with the Galaxy. Excuse me? Beckham was on loan to AC Milan from LA during the offseason, for the sole purpose of Beckham wanting to stay in shape in order to impress the English national team. As soon as this story broke part of me thought we’d never see Beckham in an MLS kit again, but I convinced myself that was crazy. I mean Beckham came to the US to help the image of soccer in the states, why would he bail? And then, once Beckham got a taste of the premiere competition that is offered in Europe, playing in Italy’s top league Serie A, he wanted nothing to do with MLS soccer anymore. There were reports that Beckham was tired of playing in the MLS because of the weak competition and once he got the opportunity to play in Europe again he wanted to stay there. I wrote an article then about how if Beckham wanted to be that selfish and baby out on the MLS then we shouldn’t even welcome him back to the US and let him stay in Italy.
Finally, he decided that he’d stay with Milan until their season ended and he’d return midseason to LA. I heard on the radio tonight the Beckham has left Milan and will be returning to LA to return to action with the Galaxy. The season is close to half over as they have played 15 of 34 MLS games already, and have struggled recording many ties. The LA Galaxy fans and MLS fans in general, those who were so excited when Beckham first arrived on the MLS scene should boo him vehemently when he returns to action. The constant back and forth, and the ultimate hanging out to dry of the LA program by Beckham should be enough to make fans irate. I am a fan of MLS and European soccer, and I used to like David Beckham as much as the next guy, but I have lost all respect for him and believe that he should be booed until he decides to pack it up and head back to Europe for good.
