Spain sits atop newest FIFA world rankings, and why isn’t soccer more popular in the US?

The newest FIFA world rankings are out for this month, and as one would expect Spain now sits atop the FIFA rankings. Fresh off of their 1-0 victory over Germany in the Euro 2008 final, Spain moved up three places to become only the sixth team to be number one overall in the 15 year history of the rankings. (France, Germany, Brazil, Italy, and Argentina) Italy had a solid showing in the Euro 2008 and their semifinal berth earned them the number two spot ahead of Germany and Brazil. US wins opening World Cup qualifier

The United States men’s soccer team took a small step towards qualifying for the 2010 World Cup this weekend. The US upended Barbados 8-0 in their first World Cup qualifier under new head coach, Bob Bradley. It was only the second time the US has scored 8 goals in a game (8-1 win vs. Cayman Islands in 1993), and the largest margin of victory for the men in the red, white, and blue. (Read More)
