Jim Thome, YES!

If only the nation could have heard the great White Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson, instead of the TBS guys, that’s what he probably would have said. Nonetheless, Jim Thome hit a home run in the 7th inning to help lead the White Sox to a 1-0 victory in the one-game playoff to win the 2008 AL Central Division championship.

John Danks pitched eight brilliant innings on three days rest, allowing only two hits against a Twins team that swept them last week. Nick Blackburn was equal for seven innings, with only black mark being Thome’s home run. In a game where both teams needed them, they both stepped up with the performance of their young careers. The Chicago White Sox used a five-run sixth inning in a must-win makeup game against Detroit to force a one-game playoff against Minnesota on Tuesday. The Sox were trailing 2-1 going into the sixth before rookie second baseman Alexei Ramirez in a grand slam to put the Sox ahead for good. Gavin Floyd allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings on three days rest for the win.

Chicago has struggled down the stretch but won the two most important games of the season to keep their postseason hopes alive. They salvaged the series finale against Cleveland yesterday and won the 162nd game of the season to tie Minnesota at 88-74. (Read More)

Brewers Win Wild Card, Mets Fall Short Again

It took all 162 games to determine the National League Wild Card and after the Marlins beat the Mets 4-2, the Brewers will be in the playoffs for the first time since 1982 after they defeated the Cubs earlier in the day 3-1.

CC Sabathia pitched again on three days rest and again pitched a complete game. It was his seventh complete game with the Brewers and tenth on the season. Even though he was in the NL for less than half the year, he’ll be strongly considered for the Cy Young Award. Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer in the 8th to seal the win. (Read More)

Twins Sweep Sox, Take ½ Lead In AL Central

Posted Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by Jim Fox | Comment Here (0)

With a 2 ½ game lead and a magic number of five heading into the three game set against the Twins, all the White Sox had to do was not get swept. Unfortunately for them, winning at the Metrodome isn’t easy. The Twins won 7-6 in 10 innings to sweep the Sox out of Minnesota and quite possibly the playoffs.

The Sox had a 6-1 lead in the third inning but the Twins kept chipping away before tying it up in the eighth inning. The game was over when Ozzie Guillen called upon closer Bobby Jenks with one out in that inning with the score 6-4, who isn’t a more than three out closer. (Read More)

Millen Out As President/CEO

When your team posts a 31-84 record on your watch, chances are your days are numbered. Lions team president and CEO Matt Millen was removed from the position today after that abysmal record was just too much for the team and fans to take any longer. The move has been a long time coming for some fans, who have wanted this done since at least 2005.

This move came two days after vice president Bill Ford Jr., son of owner William Clay Ford, publicly stated he would remove Millen from his position if he had such authority. It didn’t take long for Mr. Ford to act. It wasn’t clear whether he was fired or he resigned. (Read More)

Thank You Ellis Hobbs

Somebody had to say it and somebody stepped up to the plate. Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs took a shot at New England fans after they booed the team when they lost to Miami 38-13. Expectations are so high that when a 21-game regular season winning was snapped, the fans did nothing but boo or left during the fourth quarter.

He, and the team for that matter, has every right to call the fans out on that. The Patriots have been the best team in the NFL in recent years and they turn on them after one bad game. They don’t even realize how spoiled they are. (Read More)
